The sweetFrog Story

2009

Entrepreneur Derek Cha, along with his wife Annah Cha and two children, moved to Richmond, VA., in 2009. Even in the midst of an unfriendly economy, Derek knew the time was right to enter the frozen yogurt market. With a little bit of hope, a lot of faith, a dash of prayer, and the support of his friends and family, Derek opened the very first sweetFrog store in Richmond.

2010

The sweetFrog brand is a unique, family friendly brand with core values of quality and dedication to customer loyalty. In 2010 sweetFrog introduced our highly marketable and identifiable brand ambassadors and mascots Scoop and Cookie, who are both a hit with children!

2011

The growth continues – sweetFrog opened 29 more stores, resulting with 60 sweetFrog stores opened by 2011.

2012

By April 2012, sweetFrog had 180 stores operating in the United States and a few foreign countries. Boxwood Capital Partners of Richmond, VA bought into Derek Cha’s vision of growth, fueling more growth.

2013

In 2013, sweetFrog hops into amusement parks, opening locations in Cedar Fair’s Kings Dominion and Carowinds. By May 2013, sweetFrog was the fastest growing franchisor of premium “weigh and pay” frozen yogurt stores with over 300 locations open or in development!

2014

sweetFrog continues to grow in 2014 by leaps and bounds through-out the United States and abroad.

2016

New sweetFrog franchise business models were launched in 2016, with the addition of Mobile and Non-Traditional units.

2018

In Fall 2018, sweetFrog was acquired by a wholly-owned subsidiary of MTY Food Group, headquartered in Scottsdale, AZ.

Today

Today, sweetFrog has grown by leaps and bounds (or hops)! Currently, sweetFrog has hundreds of locations in the United States and several more internationally. By focusing on building “hoppiness” in each and every community, we are able to stand apart from the competition and lead by example. Just walk into any one of our locations nationwide, or follow us on Instagram, @sweetFrog, and see how much our guests love being part of the sweetFrog Family.
